Persona: Cutthroat and competent, commands the attention of every room she's in.
Nature: Volitile egotist, not nearly the master manipulator they think they are.
The cutthroat Don of the Alighieri Syndicate. When she arrived in the Beyond she quickly started work as a singer but moved her way up to being in charge of the all girls at the gin joint she was working at, acting as ma'am. Soon enough she was running not only her original speakeasy, but several others as well, and through that became connected to all the other gangs that were trying to gain ground in Hades at the time. As the fighting between them came to a peak and the Reapers started to step in to stop the chaos, but Esther needed the gangsters to continue running her business and so used all her favours to call a meeting between the groups. She convinced them to join forces and work together, and used the power she had as a "neutral" negotiator to put herself at the centre of every decision. By doing this she became the Don of the Alighieri Syndicate.
Alighieri isn't actually her maiden name, she married one of the original gangs leaders to secure her place as part of the family. His clothes were later found in a box floating at sea.
Background
When she was alive she worked very closely with the church, giving up her few worldly possessions and denying herself emotions deemed as sinful. When she died of a preventable illness due to her church's insistence that God would she her through, she decided to revinvent herself, to take selfishly and love openly regardless of how it hurt others. "I've earnt it after all she gave up for nothing" she thought.
